I heard of a gold disc (perhaps a DVD?) that was sent to Mars filled with human images and music. Does anyone know what was specifically on this disc?

I think you're probably talking about the Voyager Golden Record...

Its a phonograph record included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. It contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It is intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find it.

To further expound upon the previous answer, neither of the two Voyager spacecraft were sent to Mars. Voyager 1 performed flybys of Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 2 did the same and then carried on to Uranus and Neptune. Both are still currently outward bound towards interstellar space. Voyager 1 is the most distant man-made. You can read all about them here:

Robin the Math & Sci Guru's right, but you might be thinking of the Beagle 2 mission to Mars, which had a call sign composed by Blur, and a colour calibration chart designed by Damien Hirst.
