I need some advice on which locations in the Northern VA area or the DC metro area would be the perfect place to buy a 1 BR condo... Arlington? Reston? DC? Fairfax?

Also - is it better to buy an older one for cheaper and renovate before selling OR better to buy a brand new?

Much appreciated...

There are several things to factor:

1/ Length of commute btw home and work...no point in buying in Leesburg VA if you qork all the way in Rockville, MD since your commute would be about 1 hour each way, everyday...can you handle that???

2/ Do you own a car....there are still very few metro stations in NOVA compared to MD...if you don't own a car, you mgiht be limited to few places....

3/ How much do you want to spend? 1BA/1BA in NOVA start from the high $100k's while 2BD/2BA start mid-high $200k's.......there is so much new construction in the area that you actually get a better deal buying newer rather than older to renovate.....

I can't help with specific locations, but normally it is better to buy old and renovate. It takes more time and effort, but generally it is a better financial move. New properties are for the lazy people, and you know there are a lot of those out there.

Condo, go with Arlington. Great views of DC from there.
