Do online forums like this one provide a good way of solving problems while offering peer support, or does it create a risk of problems being solved incorrectly?

That happens regularly.
The answers are picked by the asker, who doesn't know. They pick the answer that pleases them most. This is especially bad in the health care category, where people elect to treat real illness with careless commentary: heart pain? Oh, try sniffing lavender! Children listless? Beat them!
I think yahoo answers have more weight than they should, due to their prominent placement in a yahoo search.

Yes, but what I do is I ask a question, then go by the majority of what people answer. If it is a very, very important question and I can't get a good majority saying the same thing, I go ahead and google and get the correct answer. The reason I ask on here first is just because it's a fun way to find answers.

Short Answer: Yes...

Hopefully you will get many answers, and then best to see if there is a common answer given.
If a single answer to a question, then hopefully there will be sources provided.
Often a quick Google using the question will reveal many answers.

But, it all depends on the question and how it was asked.

Someone just asked a question: "How can I generate my email address, it keeps failing."
Now that will get answers about all sorts of topics, but I bet none are related to what he was really asking...

If you were to ask (again) probably what is the answer to life. Not all of them will be 42, but most of them will be,.

Only if everyone answering the question gives a bad answer. This could happen if the question was asked badly too.
