Our 89 Mazda 626 won't go after it is driven for a few blocks. As soon as you stop, the engine just reeves up and it won't go. If you shut if off and re start it...it will then go again for a few blocks. Any clue if this is the transmission or something else?

Yes, Transmission Problems Seems you discribing an Automatic transmission, most likely Fluid was never serviced every 30,000 miles to 50,000 depending on the driving the past owner did. And burn't out the clutch packs...

Or over filled for more than 20,000 miles and pressure in valve body just finely gave out. Over filled can cause this.

Also Torque converter going out ??? doesn't happen very offen on the 626 or MX6 but can with high miles and no servicing.

Last if its a Manual Transmission ???? Clutch but it would most likely just rev up...

Take it to a Tranmission Guy or If you have a friend thats into cars have them drive it with you...

Good Luck.... Zoom Zoom Zoom

I have known 3 people that have had 626 automatics that the tranny has gone out. Your problem sounds like one of them.

With the problem you described id bet money it the blower resistor that is bad. When they fail the either work on low or high setting only. That would be where I would start. You maybe low on charge for the air conditioner. If its an R12 system you would have to convert it to R134A or take it to a shop that sell the expensive R12. But the system leak should be repaired vs a "top off."
