Point of this question is unfocused. Not critical or important to investing at all. You can buy a stock the day before it goes ex-dividend so wait is only 1 day before you own the dividend but that is often a poor strategy as just buying tax liability. You generally do not buy mutual funds outside a retirement acct in December for that reason. There is no "best" dividend & will not be a big % of invested capital unless company is in trouble. Need a longer term focus on investing vs speculating
