have changed to a dimmer switch suitable but same problem

You dont say if it's mains or low voltage?? However, it's the lamp or transformer that is vibrating with the 'chopped up ' supply from the dimmer. Try a Lutron dimmer, top quality with little or no hums and buzzes, depending on the model you choose.

Sounds like a transformer problem. If it's 12v, which most halogens are then it will run off a transformer. They often buzz when they get a bit knackered, especially when running off dimmers. Try running it off a normal switch.

Not all halogens are dimmer switch compatible! If your light has a built in transformer, even with 'so called halogen compatible' switch - it will buzz.

The halogens that are compatible are direct wired - no transformer!

It is probably just warming up, does it quit after a few seconds?

mine did, too. it worked for a while and then broke. it started getting really hot and shutting off and i was afraid to have it on and leave the room. ~

they all do this to a greater or lesser extent
