My daughter loves Harry Potter, but was not impressed with So You Want to Be A Wizard. I did not read it myself, so all I can say is she just wasn't interested in reading any more of them. I would recommend Patricia Wrede's Dealing With Dragons series (Published in one book as The Enchanted Forest Chronicles), Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising, Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen), Tamora Pierce's Alanna series (any of her series, really), and Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword and The Hero and The Crown.

I absolutely love Harry Potter but I found So You Want to Be a Wizard long and boring. It's not written the same way and its more like a science fiction novel than a childrens book. I'd recommend the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan.

Definitely.

Also recommend:
Susan Cooper, The Dark is Rising series
Diana Wynne Jones, The Chronicles of Chrestomanci
Tamora Pierce, Circle of Magic quartet
Brian Jacques, Redwall series

Yes. I have to admit though the series is a slow starter. You really have to get into the second book before it really takes off. And they get better as they go!! Other series: Charlie Bone, Pendragon, Series of Unfortunate events. Happy reading.
