I've installed a 1/2 hp Craftsman garage door opener and it works really well, however there is an electrical humming noise that kind of scares me. I don't think it's the motor, sounds more like a transformer type hum. Is this something to be concerned with?

Did you run the electrical line to it and if so, did you wire the ground? I assume the opener is a 3-prong plug and you are not using some adapter to plug it into a 2-prong plug. (Yes, people still do that. Unbelievable!) Recheck that the gound wire is attached to the receptacle. If it is, then I would suspect the travel limits are not set properly.

A small amount of humming is normal. If it is excessive, it could be caused by extra drag on the motor. Does your garage door work smoothly and easily, when unhooked from the machine? If not, then this needs to be corrected and could be the cause of the noise.
If all is good, then check the alighnment of the "T" rail. There is a toll free number in the manual where you can contact a company service rep to explain your concerns.

If it hums while the door is moving, it is probably the sound of the motor running and is probably normal. If it occurs when the door is not moving or you can determine if it is not motor noise, then I would be concerned.
