Natalie Wood could not sing (Marnie Nixon's voice was dubbed over Natalie's), she was just a good dancer, and was not even Hispanic. Yet she starred, and got top billing, in the movie.

It's called "star power"

BTW, you should check the list of movies in which Marnie Nixon sang (uncredited) for other actresses. It's really amazing.

The King and I (for Deborah Kerr)
My Fair Lady (for Audry Hepburn) and of course WSS are the most prominant.

She did get to sing AND appear as one of the nuns in Sound of Music

Yes, her voice was dubbed. A woman named Marni Nixon sang for Natalie. She also did Audrey Hepburn's voice in My Fair Lady.
