Two
Parity bits on individual bytes allow checking for changes in 1 bit in the byte.
Checksums on groups of bytes (files, texts, records) by requiring total of bytes treated as numbers to add up to the same number before and after transmission.
Other more complicated methods exist that allow repair of data which these two don't.
