I hope to get some well thought out answers dealing with philosophy of the need and not just because your team deserves a shot.

I don’t think other sports with playoff systems crown a champion but don’t really crown “the best” team. Often the team that wins the playoffs, but many times the best team doesn’t.

We are at that time of the year where people are going crazy because NCAA Football needs a playoff to crown the champion. I don’t really think it needs it. Are we just so use to having a playoff system in other sports that we have a hard time dealing with the concept of a sport so widely followed doesn’t have one?

After reading some of the initial responses, that I do like so far, I want to add WHY is it important that a champion gets crowned via a playoff? Doesn't this leave the debate still open as to the "best" team, since the best team does not always win the championship game?

I, for one, am tired of all the purported "controversy" surrounding teams that are tied with the same record and are equally deserving (on paper, anyway) of a title shot and not being afforded it due to some freaking computer program, instead of lining it up and playing the game! People whine about the "bowl relationships" being lost, but if the BCS system were to be used to rank the teams and the BCS bowls used for playoff sites, everyone would still make money and be happy. Stage an 8-team playoff with all conferences eligible based on BCS ranking and rules for mid major conferences, such as the rule that allowed Boise State into the game with Oklahoma. That way, weaker conferences can't complain about being "left out", and all other bowl qualifiers can still go to lesser bowls.

I think the uproar is mostly about how the 2 teams are selected to play for the national championship. And that being said, the only true way to have the right teams playing for a NC would be to have an 8 team playoff. It works fine for every other sport I don't see why it wouldn't work for NCAA football.

Because the people want a true champion not one decided in a board room. What people don't take into account when you have a playoff system anybody can win.

how can you hand pick a best team, as a team whose lost a game over a team who hasn't? thats why college football is such a joke. all it is is a bunch of large programs who schedule easy *** games against unknown opponents so they can win 60-3 then claim they are the best. no way would they ever want to play multiple games against similar teams, they are all cowardly.
