phi is also called the "golden mean." This number is defined as a particular ratio. Draw a line segment labeled AB and select an interior point labeled C. We'll call the distance from A to C (the length of the line segment AC) "a"; and we'll call the distance from C to B (the line segment CB) "b". Now if the following ratio holds then "a" is phi:
((a + b)) / a = (b / a)
So, suppose that we drew a line segment such that "b" was exactly equal to 1, then let's solve the above equation for "a".
((a + 1) / a) = (1 / a)
Multiply both sides by "a" and collect terms together and to have
a^2 - a - 1 = 0
From the quadratic formula (choosing the positive root) we get
a = (1 + sqrt(5)) / 2 which is irrational and roughly 1.618033989
This number has the property that 1/phi = phi -1 (try it on your calculator!).
The ratio is visible in a number of ways. If you look at a picture of the Acropolis in Athens, the rectangular front wall has the proberty that its length divided by its height is the golden mean, or phi.

uncomplicated. The phi quantity is the style of stuff you are able to decrease an apple phi into and the holy grail is what you rigidity the apples by once you end stewing them for the phi.
