I think it's great that she's making a secondary school in S Africa for girls. I hope with the publicity though, that she can get more opened and reach more undereducated people.
I hear that she's trying to open a school for boys and girls next.
BTW Publicity helps with financing it, don't hate her for getting it out on the news.

I guess you're talking about that school she's just opened here in South Africa... well as a south african who sees exactly how many people need help everyday...I can only say that I think she should have opened FIFTY normal schools with that money, but instead she opened a RIDICULOUSLY posh school for a tiny priviledged few girls. Now bear in mind that these girls have previously lived in tin shacks with no electricity or water etc, now they're in a school where they have monogramed sheets1?!?!??!!? I think they would have just been grateful with normal bedding if it meant that hundreds of other kids could have had bedding too. I think she made it so ridiculously posh to look good - when actually she could have done more good with that money by making more normal schools with it.

I think it is amazing that instead of celebrating a rich person putting millions of their dollars to work in charities, we criticize her for not using the money the way WE want them to use it. How self-centered is that???
Oprah has contributed to charities for years...and yes...many were stateside. But even if she hadn't, she put her money in a charity that resonated with her. Even if it was for buying PETA (which I loathe) a new boat to throw in front of another government vessel, I wouldn't fault her, because it was a charity that meant something to her.
BTW, she commented that she "considered" putting a school up in an inner city neighborhood, but after visiting schools in a target area, she was dismayed at how LITTLE the kids cared about their education. She did not want to waste her money where it wasn't wanted...can't fault her for that thinking. African families are desperate for good education. Oprah knows her money will be well-used there.

The question is how much, out of the millions she made, did she use to help people in Africa.

Hey, you gotta figure, that building a school for kids, no matter who does it, for whatever reason, is a good thing.
So even if opie is a big mouth, arrogant, self-promoting, know-it-all turkey, at least some of the money she sucks in from all those gullible fans is going to a good cause.
some rich folks like publicity. it helps them get richer.
