Not yet, but starting January 1, 2008, you won't be able to get back into the United States without a valid passport. I'd advise you to get one soon because there is going to be a HUGE rush this year -- EVERYONE, regardless of age, must have a valid passport to get back into the United States starting next year, no matter where you go or how you get there. For right now, however, you can get into Mexico and back into the United States with a picture ID and a birth certificate.

There have been some changes made to the passport requirement for traveling into Mexico, but if you are traveling via land or sea you are not required to have a passport to travel in and out of Mexico. That is slated to change in January of 2008. If you are traveling into Mexico via air travel you will be required to have passport as of the end of this month.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

Always always travel with your passport. Even if you are not required to show one when you enter Mexico, you are required to present it upon returning to the US. If you don't have one, you had better obtain it prior to leaving the country.
