i stay in student accomodation, hence restricted place for laundry... the fan seems best to dry my underwear after i do my laundry...just wondering if i'll damage the fan in any way by that...

You can, but if they're dirty, the crap will really hit the fan.

Here's what I do. Simply use those springy clothes pins and clip the items right to the guard on the FRONT of the fan, turn it on high; the fan will fill up the articles of clothing and it will be dry in no time...and will not get caught in the fan becaus the clothes are being blown away from the machine. I've done this with slacks; just clip them by either side of the waistband and turn it on...the air will fill the pants up just like a windsock at the airport and they'll be dry in a flash.

IT wont stay in place lest u tie it.
Due to the centrifugal effect, it will be thrown radially outwards and NEVER inwards as u thot.
So it can never jam ur motor!

I would hang it a foot away, same results and faster because it seems to reach maximum wind at that distance .
