40% of mothers with small children are stay at home mothers. 60% are working mothers, paying daycare.
the census burea has all kinds of info on that subject.
http://www.census.gov/
just fill in the blank field with 'working mothers' etc and do a search for all the questions you have on this subject.

Currently I work and my wife stays home to take care of our 3.5 month old twins. Around April though we are moving to the East Coast (where she is from) so she can rekindle her dream of expanding a greenhouse with her friend (who has inherited/bought the business from his parents). It is a solid business and she really wants to work there and make it even better. When we move I will be taking the role of househusband...staying home to take care of the kids while she is at work.
I feel a bit weird about it, in that my wife will be bringing in the money instead of me but since it is what she wants to do, and I don't mind, we'll go with it. I do plan to start a side business at home to bring in at least some money, but I don't yet know what. I know the twins will be 2 full-time jobs in itself! Hehe.

How should I know? I know that in my family I am the housewife...
In some families both parents take equal responsibilities with chores and kids because of the need for both parents/partners to work.
Alot more men do stay home with kids now as times are changing and there are increasingly more job opportunities for women. More women than ever are going to college and pursuing careers that bring in alot of $$$$...Family dynamics are ever changing...

it's very difficult to measure something like this because daily lives are always changing. it all comes down to the wife and husband and what they want. if the woman doesn't want to be a housewife and wants to work, then go for it. if she wants to stay home then stay home.
