What are the effects of physics songs on the learning of high school students?

Physics songs are songs dealing with different aspects of physics.

I used a collection of songs by Michael Offutt called the Physics Songbag and another called the Chemistry Songbag. They were clever songs that taught basic principles. I thought using them proved to be very successful. I caught my students singing "M times V, just a little Momentum" at a basketball game it was such a catchy tune. Students can learn lyrics to a song much more quickly than they can a list of facts.

I sometimes had a one off lesson with my year 7 & 8 (11-13 yr olds) classes over in the music department. I would split them up into groups and get them to make up their own songs about a topic. They would then have to perform them in front of the class. It was an 'informally' assessed piece of their class work. It also helps them work in a group. I gave the topic of magnetism once and I had some fantastic poems and rhymes made up! It really helped the kids too as they got some of the best marks in that topic.

I have not heard any physics songs as such. I did use the monty python 'elements' song once though. It was great for teaching the periodic table and livened the lesson up no end!
