The guideline is now to spend more than 33% of your after tax income on housing. So, with that calculation, you should be spending about $726.00 on rent. With that being said, most people including me, can't find a decent place for that money. Most of us end up spending around 50% on housing. It also depends where you live, some places are much more expensive than others.

As a general rule... never go above 30% of your income on rent

The best way to go would be by dividing your income in three equal parts of $733.33.

First part should go for rent.
Second part for all expenses
Third part should go to SAVINGS.

It may not always possible to stick to such a plan, but it is worth the try.
