The Americans may have all the best equipment and hi-tech weaponry which gives them a huge edge in modern warfare (when it works right!), but true, they are nowhere near being the best-trained soldiers in the world. Man for man against his equilavlent in other Western armies, the US infantry soldier does not compare. It is the huge sums of money behind the US military that gives America its strength on the battlefield, not personal skills. Professionally, there at a lot better armies out there than the Americans, and I'm not just thinking Britain here.

I really am starting to enjoy your questions. I am an American, as you may know by now.
No one can dispute the fact that the British have the finest army in the world. You have had centuries of military history and training. The American army is certainly ragtag in comparison, and I am a veteran of the U.S. Army saying so.
You should understand, however, that the USA has only had a standing army since WWII. Prior to that, armies were disbanded after each armed conflict. We don't have the long standing military traditions of most European countries.
Given that, the U.S. armed forces do a pretty fair job.
And another thing, the USA has only been a world power since WWII. So, we don't have the hundreds of years of international policy making experience that the British have. Are we making blunders? Of course we are, by the buckets full. But, we still need the British, not only for support but to tell us when we are out of our minds as well.
This is one disappointment I have with the UK and Tony Blair in particular. He seems to be a yes man for Bush. You guys need a PM with a little grit. Someone who can look an American president in the eye and tell him he's a nincompoop.

You don't find any soldiers anywhere better trained than the Navy SEALS and The Green Berets. And you know it. I don't even know why the Brits have an army. Heck, they're not going to take anything on without the backing of the USA. You know that, too, if you know anything at all about the history of the British Army. Now, The Israelis.... that's a whole different situation altogether. Their methods of acquiring intelligence might appall Americans, but hey.... they sure get it ... and swiftly.

Hollywood is only entertainment, for our pleasure, to laugh, or cry or to turn off. USA military is a body of real men and women, that put their lives on the line. I would think that any military would think they were the best. If you are truly an x-British soldier, you should know better, because you to have put your life on the line. In my family most of them are policemen, and they don't like police shows, I'm sure most military do not like being compared to Hollywood's military.

Because even the police officers in America have guns. People probably think that because they're a rich country their soldiers will be the most well trained and have the best weapons. I know wars aren't just about killing, but that's the first thing that comes to mind.

Anyone who knows anything about the military, knows that British troops are the best in the world. From the infantry to the SAS they are first class. Even with shoddy equipment they do a first class job.

The problem with the Yanks is that they have this in built need to self promote, and we all know that those that can't walk the walk, have to talk the talk.

Thank you for being one of the brave men/women that help keep us safe.

Have a read up on the second world war and see who held the Germany army for so many days and caused more damage to them than any other country before they gave themselves up because no one came to help them. It wasn't the English or the Americans.

Look at some old movies. British movies have had the same problem. (But I have to tip my hat to David Niven, a Scot, a graduate of Sandhurst, and a real fighting man.) It's just that Hollywood outproduces the UK in movies.
