Just another note: there are two kinds of IP addresses. Public and Private. If you want to get on the internet, you need a public address. This is provided by your ISP (i.e. Comcast, Verizon, etc.).
To find out what your public IP address is, go to http://www.whatismyip.com
If you have a router at home between your computer and your modem, then the router is given the Public IP address and your computer is dished out a Private IP address from the router. Usually something along the lines of 192.168.1.x (x = any number between 0 and 254).
To find out your Private IP address, go to start -> run -> type "cmd". When the Command prompt pops up type "ipconfig /all" This will give you a lot of information including your IP address.

An IP address is the address of your computer, kind of like your adress at home. When you send someone a letter in the mail, the post office uses the address to know where to deliver it. Likewise, the IP address on a network is used to tell the letter (or packet) where to go.
To find your own IP address, you can enter "ipconfig" at the DOS prompt.

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique address that devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP)—in simpler terms, a computer address. Any participating network device—including routers, computers, time-servers, printers, Internet fax machines, and some telephones—can have their own unique address. Also, many people can find personal information through IP addresses.
An IP address can also be thought of as the equivalent of a street address or a phone number (compare: VoIP (voice over (the) internet protocol)) for a computer or other network device on the Internet. Just as each street address and phone number uniquely identifies a building or telephone, an IP address can uniquely identify a specific computer or other network device on a network.
An IP address can appear to be shared by multiple client devices either because they are part of a shared hosting web server environment or because a proxy server (e.g., an ISP or anonymizer service) acts as an intermediary agent on behalf of its customers, in which case the real originating IP addresses might be hidden from the server receiving a request. The analogy to telephone systems would be the use of predial numbers (proxy) and extensions (shared).
IP addresses are managed and created by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. IANA generally assigns super-blocks to Regional Internet Registries, who in turn allocate smaller blocks to Internet service providers and enterprises.
You can find your own IP address by clicking Start>Run>type cmd and then type IPconfig

When you're connected works like a very fast postal service. You send and recieve to data(instant messages, e-mail, pictures, webpages) with other computers just the same as you send and recieve letters from your mail box. You have an IP address, so a remote computer knows how to send stuff to you. The remote computer has an IP address so you can send something to them.
The reason why www.yahoo.com is called a domain is because theres a function that the internet provides that turns www.yahoo.com into an ip address. Since IP addresses are numeric they are harder to remember than www.yahoo.com, but an IP address and a domain name can be used interchangeably.
IP addresses must be unique and are assigned by your ISP. IP addresses may be shared using something called NAT. Basically NAT works by remembering who's talking to who, so if you have multiple computers in a house sharing the same internet connection the data is routed to the appropriate computer. In this case your computer IP is only unique within your house and the address the rest of the world sees is the one that was assigned by your ISP.

An IP address, is a series of numbers unique to your PC that allows you to commmunicate with other PC's on a network and set up an internet connection. You could compare it to a telephone number or a street address etc.. You can assign your own IP address or you can have one assigned to you.
If you have an internet connection, go to the bottom right hand corner of your screen and find the icon for the internet. Right click and select 'open network connections' Then right click on the icon that says something like 'Wireless Network Connection, connected firewall' and then scroll down to the bottom until you find the word's 'internet protocol TCP/IP' and your IP address is there.

an IP address is simple the act of assigning (unique) IP addresses to devices on the network. It is also the equivalent of a street address or phone number on your computer or other network device on a network. Everybody IPA address has 32 bits divided into four octets ( four set of eight binary digits). On a school network ever body has the same IPA address network but at home you will have a IPA address that the company assigned on your computer. Your IPA address also identify the specific network on which you reside and your computer on that network. like for a example your IPA address is 192.168.1.3, your computer is host 3 on network 192.168.1.0. with an IPA address you can identifies both a network and a host, you can route communications through large network, including the Internet. you can know your own IPA address buy clicking on start than click on command prompt and type in the word IPA CON FIG and your IPA address on that computer will pop up. I do not know how to find someone else IPA Address on line. In fact I will not take the time because it is stupid. The purpose for you to have a IPA address so you can communicate over the Internet can uniquely identify one another. Also for you pro vise global computer address.

The IP address is simply an identification number for your computer on a network. With an ip address, you can connect to it for things such as remote desktop, or you can use it to ping it or check to see if it is active and can send/receive data.
To check your ip address, go to start, run, type cmd, then hit enter. At the command prompt, type ipconfig and hit enter. You should see you ip address listed in the window. When you are finished, just type exit and hit enter to exit command prompt.

The best way to look at this is that your IP Address is just like your mailing address. Its unique and it lets people know where you are and where you send and receive mail. Kinda like data. You can find your IP address by typing ipconfig. This will tell you your computer's address. If you are using a cable modem, you can access the router to get your ISP given address and anyones address that is attached to your router.
