Well... there is no discrimination as such on the basis of color in India. But we all aspire to be fairer (its not white as whites in US or EC), but a lighter shade of brown is called fair in India (its also called wheatish). Most of the times, the fairer people are considered to be beautiful and dark color is associated with poor people (most of the poor people are dark because they work outside in hot, sunny climate and thus naturally have darker skin). But, not being beautiful is not a reason for discrimination in india. It is just that when men are planning to get married, one seldom looks for a dark skinned girl - they all aspire to have a fair bride (as it is considered to be beautiful). in all other things, dark skinned people get equal treatment. they have equal number of friends or social relations. remember that dark skin is predominantly more common for an indian - so they are more in numbers. but its just that white/fair people get a lot of attention. There is a debate going ON on whether beautiful people have some advantages over the ordinary looking people or they have more disadvantages associated with their good looks...

Hi, Paprika. In my opinion, the perception of dark skinned people in India is better than that of the USA. The present President of India is a living example for the thing that the color of the skin doesn't matter. There may be a few instances that some jobs or positions in corporate sector accomodating the fair skinned people in preference to the dark skinned people. It all depends on individual experiences.

They arent discriminated upon. Most of the people are dark skinned but you wont find dark skinned people on TV or anything and people still find light skinned people comparatively more atteactive . But the trend is slowly changing with actresses going in for tans etc. So I would say dark skin is becoming more popular right now.

first explain dark.. since in India there are a range of shades..
if your question is about africans then its simple.. they are foreigners who get the normal stare... but within indians colour makes a great difference.. the whole country is addicted to fair skin.. funny... because being fair is just relative... someone is always fairer, its because the country was ruled by white people for nearly 2 centuries and dominated by fair skinned upper caste people for thosands of years .. so anyone white are regarded high.. this needs a simple proof.. the whole country is aspiring to become fairer than they are.. courtesy - the number of fairness creams sold in indian market.. just take a look at the cinema or comercials.. you will find just fair skinned people smiling... this is just my opinion... you can get volumes of answers on this topic..

Depends on what part of India you are in. In the south it does not matter as much, as though in the north, if you are dark skineed you are thought be of a poor background, very dirty and valueless. As for the lighter skinned people, they are considered very intelligent, beautiful and superiour. As you can see, Parts of India still have a bit of slave mentality.

Just like dark skinned people here in the U.S. it is frowned upon. Not so much as in the past but it is still there and yes, it's mostly within that persons racial group.

Well, legally there is no discrimination, but people seem to value lighter-skinned people more; they are preferred in most Bollywood movies etc.
