I've never had any of the used cars I've bought inspected and haven't had any problems but I'm helping my buddy buy his first car and I think it would be a good idea. What should I tell him to ask the mechanic?

The most important ,engine and trans followed by suspension and brakes.Tires are wear and tear items but should be considered. With an engine compression test probably approx. 2hrs x whatever he charges/hr. well worth it.good luck

That depends on where you live and who does the inspection. But what ever you do, don't go for the lowest bidder. I answer lots of question here and I see lots of people write that they had the car inspected yet the car broke down after the purchase anyway. And inspection cannot find every problem. Just so you know. === In my experience, you should reserve about 10% to 20% of a use car purchase budget to after purchase repairs. Good Luck.

Not sure if it's the same everywhere but here in Maine it's $12.50.
