The E36 is the 1991-2000 3xx series. The last two numbers of the 3 series number denote engine size. 1.6 and 1.8 are 4 cylinders, the 2.0, 2.5, 2.8 and 3.2 are straight 6's.

That depends E36 is the chassis. In the US you could get a 318 which is a 4 cyl. 1.8 liter or a 325 which is a 2.5 liter.

the E36 came in two sizes both in line 6's 325 2.5 liter or 328 2.8 liter
