I won't let my 10 and 12 year old daughters read any of these books, and luckily, they aren't really interested in them. They're a celebration of the worst female sterotypes and encourage girls to act like small, nasty women.
If you (or whoever) need something to read, try Tamora Pierce, Robin McKinley, American Girls, Patricia Wrede, and definitely Madeleine L'Engle.

I've read the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld and I think if other people who are answering this question had read them they wouldn't be accusing them of being inappropriate. They so do not premote sex. And they definitely are not the kind of book lzzilla is describing--"Everything that I've read in these books promote sex at the age of 12, never going to school, and the general idea that beauty is all that matters in life." In fact the whole idea of the Uglies trilogy counteracts that "beauty is all that matters in life" psychology. So far from being "completely worthless" the series is quite good. Now I can't speak one way or the other on the other books (Gossip Girl, Clique, A-list) although based on appearances I would have to say they're probably for an older audience.

To be completely honest with you, I've only leafed through these books and others like them, and my overall conclusion is that this genre of books is really not what pre-adolescent and teenage girls need to be reading today. Everything that I've read in these books promote sex at the age of 12, never going to school, and the general idea that beauty is all that matters in life. I'm not saying that these books are completely worthless, but you should be cautious as to how girls read them and how they view themselves as an influence of these books. Have you ever heard of Tamora Pierce's books? Those are pretty good, at least when I was 11 or 12. There are also some great teen/young adult books at every library I've gone to - good luck!
