My laptop has been infected with some kind of malware, turning it into a zombie and spamming thousands of people when I'm on the internet. I've taken it off my network but I can't remove whatever it is that is causing the spam to be sent out. It's not using my normal mail clients and I can't see the process that's running the spamming.

I've run Norton on it, Spyware Doctor, AVG and ZoneAlarm but it doesn't detect anything. I've also tried running a process scanner and I can see that my system is sending out material to various domains, using DNS (not SMTP or UDP). I've tried looking on Google for solutions but it's impossible getting an accurate answer because 'spam' is such a generic term.

Another piece of malware runs on startup which lowers my Norton anti-virus, which may be connected.

I'm not a very technically-minded person, as I'm sure you can tell - can you recommend any solutions (preferably free as I can't afford to buy MORE anti-virus software!) to solve this problem

You appear to have malware.

Get adaware, spybot, windows defender. All are free.
Install them.
Run them.
re-boot in safe mode.
run them again, and run ad/remove programs.

I had the same problem and the only way i could fix the zombie was by buying a new PC. I took the same steps as you e.g. Norton and Spyware.

Try this scan before you continue, its a free anti-virus which you don't need to download.

You could also just restore your stetting on your PC from before you had the zombie. That usually works fine.

Start -->Accessories---->System Tools---->System Restore

Follow the steps and before that make sure all the files you want kept are stored in My Documents. The My Document files doesn't go back in time so no data gets lost.

If you have games e.g. World of warcraft, you might need to reinstall it after but if things don't go your way you can go back to your original settings from before the restoration.

seems you got a bad mailing worm on your pc (network)
thats causing this spam (emails) to be sent
you may need a removal tool from norton
could try this online scan
www.housecall.trendmicro.com

would also do a full scan in safe mode with norton

if it is malware (possible) i would use
adaware se personal
www.lavasoft.com
get update, reboot and do a full scan

spybot also is a good choice

Wow, sounds like you've got a real nasty and unddtectable worm. If you wish to permanently get rid of that damn thing, I suggest a thorough reformatting. the link below will show you how to do it...I'm still being dragged kicking and screaming into the tech age, and even I (ME, for crying out loud!) was able to understand it!

You could try ClamWin antivirus. It is free and usually works pretty well.

Also you could try ad-aware, the personal version of that is also free.

One word response:

"Reformat"

Just make sure you have your systems "back up" disks, and a "bootable" floppy if possible.
