If you know which one it is, you can go to the update site and check your list of updates and see if it shows as successful or not, and there are links to download the update on its own.....try running the updates from the site and select "custom" and see what it shows you for updates....if the same one is listed you may have downloaded the update but the temp folder it was placed in cleared out before it was installed. Just install it from the site, or find the manual download and run the file from there.

The problem you are having is understandable, just back to window update setting and check the status.
Click on start - control panel - security centre then click on automatic update, see if you tick the recommended update. If that could not solve the problem then use the help resources to navigate through the security centre.Window xp has a fantastic online support, just remain calm and use it to the maximum.Good luck

It'd be worth going to Control Panel - Security Centre - Automatic Updates and check it's set to download & install, rather than just notfiy you.

Hope that helps.

It could be that the Windows XP software you have on your computer is not a genuine copy of XP and that's the reason why you cant install the updates, for this is one of the things Microsoft checks for when downloading updates of any kind.
to accept any Microsoft update you must have a genuine copy of Windows XP installed on your computer and validated.

to regulate or disable automated updating, open the device icon on accurate of issues Panel (or accurate-click My laptop and choose houses), and choose the automated Updates tab. From there basically choose the turn off automated updating.
