Welllll, it used to be a musical scene difference. Punks were into punk music, and a "f*ck it all, lets go make some trouble" attitude. Most were usually adorned with sharper edged or pointy piercings, haircuts, and "loud" tattoos, and many had a thing for plaid clothing, patches, torn sleeves, etc. They generally listened to punk music, which is more of a garage-style, loud, often fun, blood-pumping music.

Goths (I hate that name) basically and UNKNOWINGLY generally used to try to live a lifestyle similar to the Gothic peoples - who were an actual peoples, such as the vikings - the Nordic, etc. Your typical "goth" person is generally clad in dark, if not all black, clothing. They usually listen to "darker" music which focuses on pain, death, angony, angst, and generally has slower, deeper beats and lyrics.

Of course, 90% of today's "punks" and "goths" are simply cheap commercial imitations of the orginals. Usually punks are now just highschool idiots who might have a band, or go to local shows, while goths are generally geeky, lanky guys, or short fat chicks. Both groups are pretty much very fun to make fun of and laugh at, and are utterly ridiculous.

A punk usually has a hairdo like a mohawk, has saftey pins sticking out most places (nose, ears being trhe main two,) and likes bands such as "Screwdriver" "The Undertones" and before they went into the New Wave catagory, the "The Stanglers" during their punk years. A Goth however, dresses mainly in dark colours, they have long, dyed black hair, have full make up on (a cross between the rice makeup from Japan and the makeup that KISS used to wear) They tend to wear t-shirts with aband on the front (although Metalheads can also do this, so you mustn't confuse the two) and they also usually wear either New Rock boots, Dr Martens or even army boots) They also have a lot of chains and listen to music from Maralyn Manson and NIN (Nine Inch Nails)

A lot of people have covered the visual differences. . . but there are ideological differences as well.

Punk was born out of people seeing injustice in the world- and contrary to popular belief, they actually tried to do something about it. The image was a way to thwart society's norms, as was the music. It was all about rebellion. Listen to the political angles of a lot of early punk music- granted a lot of it wasn't deep, it was meant to stir you into action, whatever that action might be.

Goth was born out of post punk. It's a slightly later movement- and only slightly. Some bands that came out of the punk era started to get darker instead of brighter, started to get introspective instead of political, and focused on troubling things in the life of an individual instead of troubling things about the world. How the name came about, by the way, was gothic music was meant to capture the same essence as the gothic writers of the Romantic era, who were trying to capture the essence of the gothic art movement of the middle ages, which was called that because one art critic thought it was a barbaric style- ergo, it called to mind to him the Goths of classical times. Most goths are trying to be cultured rather than barbaric- but the connection is known. That's why there's a t shirt that says "If you're really a goth, where were you when we sacked Rome?"

Punks have an attitude problem - they think everything's **** and that there's no future, but they have yet to come up with any constructive criticism. They prefer to dress up and surf the shitness. Being a punk is basically being an angry hippy.
Goths, on the other hand, are depressives who like to sit alone in a corner concentrating on the gloom and marinading in their feelings of insecurity.
Punk and Goth music styles tend to reflect these personality syndromes.

Goths and punks are nothing like each other. Punks like bright colours and tartens and listen to punk/ska music, whereas goths wear black, have black and white make-up and listen to suicidal music! goths are like Brandon Lee from the crow, Punks are like Johny Rotten!

Punks tend to like a certain type of music. They will wear distressed clothing, with chains, safety pins and may have coloured, spikey hair.

Goths are into black. They like death/religion type images and tend to enjoy vampire movies. Purple is also a good goth colour. Again, different style of music.

Punks are usually tough and don't put up with anyone's BS. Goths are way more passive and tend to keep to themselves.

Goths wear nearly everyhing black including hair, nails and lipstick whereas punks tend to be more outrageously dressed with colourful hair.

Regardless of personal opinion of whether they look good or not it is each persons right to express themselves as they wish as long as they aren't doin any harm to anyone else.
