The term "handicapped" has its origins in the days when people with disabilities would be forced to beg for money in the streets with their 'handy caps' (hats). It can refer to physical, mental or developmental disabilities, but is no longer considered an acceptable term. Thus, we talk about people as being 'differently abled' or having different types of disabilities. These terms are seen as being less judgemental and/or more descriptive. It is also better to use 'people first' language. In other words, you might describe someone as a 'person with autism' and not an 'autistic' because we are all people first and should not be defined/limited by labels.

Most of the time, handicapped kids are in Special Ed. in order for their disability of whatever sort to be accomadated.
