i work as a part time teacher (0.6) i used to be maths co-ordinator with a pay point. we were restructured and i lost the point and the responsibility. now i have been asked to carry out the same duties but with no pay. can i refuse?

I would think you have a good case - see your union rep for a better idea though.

Check your contract. If you were given a new contract under the restructuring then there is a possibility that you do not have to do these duties. However, if you are still on the original contract then you will.

Also you may be given time as opposed to money for the duties. This may not be apparent but check the number of times you have been put on cover.

Also does the restructuring you refer to mean the TLR's, if it does, many people lost money and are still required to carry out the same duties. The NUT have rejected the notion of TLR's but without widespread support from other Unions little can be done about them at the moment.

There is always the option to refuse. It would be more pragmatic to strongly express reluctance to the people who are asking. You could say that you would be delighted to do the duties again and will start to do so with great enthusiasm once the reinstatement of the point is confirmed. Money is not the issue and while you enjoy the responsibility, without the point, you obviously feel that you are being taken advantage of.

Refer to your original contract / letter of appointment and read the wording carefully.
