Problems in Africa are part of an ongoing, seemingly eternal struggle between people of differing ideologies. All of Africa, by the way is not involved. Africa is often discussed as if it were an entire nation, when actuallu it is a continent made up of many nations, nationalities, languages and ideologies. The current turmoil is between ideologies, described as Islamic and Non-Islamic. That is rather simplified, but what it really means is there are some power struggles going on. Thisis an extension of the tribal warfare that has existed for ceturies in Sus-Saharan Africa. At one time, these struggles were small and contained in small areas. Now the trouble affects many more people and is not limited to small skirmishes. Mnay innocent people are caught in the midst. Problems are made worse by famine and disease. Widespread poverty and a breakdown of any form of government services exacerbates the problems even more.

Intelligent leaders? Other than Israelis, name 2?

Why is Africa in turmoil?

Da...because it is a continent made of up tribal type states run by dictatorships and tyrants.
..because the militaristic states are dominated by Islamic fanatics?

Why do you think having Iraq be a Democratic style nation is so important? I gives hope to millions of other Africans. It scares the 7th century Islamic mulas.

As a personal side note: Victory in Iraq scares the Liberals who can't stand the idea that President Bush might actually be on to something that might improve Africa.

After much reflection, my personal conclusion is that Africans seem to do well wherever they are individually, but when it comes to acting collectively for their common good, then there is chaos or even catastrophe. Leadership may be their problem. They need a "Moses to lead them to the promised land". So far, I can only recount few black leaders worth their salt. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana was one, Nelson Mandela of South Africa was another, Martin Luther King of USA yet another. Many more such self-less and visionary leaders would be needed before the blackman will be able to stand with his chest out. How much longer that will take, your guess is as good as mine.

History and human nature.

Because despite this Utopian idea of peace through talk, the fact is there are plenty of people in the world who will not talk, they want war and the people who don't realize this get wiped out.

Ancient hatred, greed, power, all these feed the destructive nature of man, and Africa retains many of its old ways so these concepts get feed regularly, and never diminish.

If you want to stop man from acting like this you have to eliminate all men from the world or some how manage to get them to think, act, look and talk the same. until that time Places like Africa, the middle east and every where there is conflict will continue to be in turmoil.

Don’t even try to point the finger at the United States on this one.

As an American, I'll be the first one to admit that my government is behind a lot of dirty things in the world, but Africa was not a result of American wrong doing.

Most of the problems in Africa is a result of European colonialism and local militia conflict.

If you have 10 people in the room and all want, believe they deserve , believe they can attain power. The struggle will not end until only one stands.
