I'm guessing there's no chance you have asthma? Because contrary to what people think, it's not so much the gasping for breath as the tickly cough keeping you awake every night that wears you out. I've had a cough too, following a cold, and got the same symptoms as you, but because I have medicine for asthma, inhaled steriods have helped to calm down the tickle. Other things (non med) you could try, are to sleep with your nose and mouth under the covers. The warmer air should be more soothing to your lungs. Or you could turn the heating right up in your bedroom - same logic. A friend of mine swears by eating chocolate ......................... heyho, why not give it a try. Keep some water by your bed to keep having a drink whenever the coughing spasms get too severe. Other than that, go back to your quack if it doesn't clear up.

This tastes absolutely rank but it is the best cough cure i've ever taken.... heat a jar of runny honey mixed with a small onion finely chopped (as finely as possible) and then put it back in the jar. take two dessertspoons three times a day and your cough will be gone in a week. Rotten, but medication free and more effective than anything else i've tried.

Ok well I am not really big on medicine myself. Having said this there are certain times when seeing a DR is the best thing. There are several of the answers here that could help. the honey and ginger tea for one is great. However having said that...if this does not go away in a couple of days you probably need an anitbiotic, whether you use something natural to boost the immunity of your body or go see a DR. But many people think that a chest cold is a real ailment. It isnt. It sounds like you are fighting bronchitis of some kind. The question is ... is it a bacterial or viral infection. If you are running a fever of 102 or more then you need to see a DR. If it is under 102 then you probably have a bronchial virus that will run its course whether you get an anitbiotic or not. A dr told me that if a fever is 102 or more then your body is fighting a bacteria if it is less than 102 it is a virus. He said that a lot of DRs will have you come in unnecessarily just to take your money when they know you are fighting a virus anyway. Also just an FYI...bronchial infections need to be taken seriously as they can develop into pneumonia a potentially life threatening illness if left untreated.

Your case is very similar to other case from a 22 year old guy I helped before. With a test I have in one of my books I might be able to find out what you have and get a natural medicine for you since regular medicine some times just don't work.
If you want to contact me my msn is manuelt1881@hotmail.com or manuelt1882002@yahoo.com

Do you drink? If you do drink, undissolved alcohol in your liver can prevent the medicine from taking effect. Therefore, go to the pharmacy to get some medication to dissolve the alcohol first.

Boil coke (Coca-Cola) with crushed fresh lemon. Get it boiling. drink it when it is warm.

Get some vicks vaporub, rub it around your neck and wrap a towel around your neck while sleeping. this will reduce the irritation and coughing at night. If your nose is blocked, rub some vicks just below your nose. this will relieve it too.

p.s. lozenge is only suitable for sore throat and not for cough.

Heres a breathing technique that works for me.
inhale deeply through nose(Extedd stomach as far out as possible to take in full breath)
exhale slowly through mouth(purse lips)pretending to blow out a candle.
It works for me when i get a scratchy throat, when i cough and nothing comes up,and when my asthma acts up.
I havent had to use any inhalers or my nebulizer in 5 years!
Try it!
usually when your congested,or your throat is scratchy something needs to come up.This is the best no drug way to make that happen.

Try peppermints, or anything that has a huge blast of peppermint flavor!! Peppermint flavoring comes from peppermint plants which contain a large dosage of menthol. Menthol is used to heal and ease cramps and pains in muscles. Try soft peppermints, they work fast. (That's also why a lot of cough drops are spiriment or pepperment flavored.)

WHATS the nature of your cough? is it dry or with expectoration? How it tarted? if it is started with sour throat and fever then it may take time?
Do u have allergy for something? If it is like that then you should avoid allergens.
Loozenges will help you only if it is dry in nature. If theres sputum then you require a cough syrop requiring mucolytic, and expectorants.
Regards
