If you've already written the book, contact an agent. An agent is going to be your best chance to get published. Techically the moment your work is put onto a piece of media, like a piece of paper, computer disk, tape, it is copyrighted by you. Although some people are still afraid that their work will be stolen. A technique I have heard of people doing is sending themselves a copy of the work through the mail. It has a postmark that proves it was written before that date, and since it's sealed, you couldn't have tampered with it.
But, the chances of someone stealing your work are very slim. It is tempting to tell people about it, but if you really are worried, you should keep it to yourself. If you're worried an agent might steal your work, the chances are even lower. Do your research, find a good agent, and your life will be a lot easier.

If you wrote it then it is yours. Seek out REPUTABLE (meaning they belong to a respected group) of Agents. An agent will shop your material for you AT NO COST to you. You should NEVER pay to publish your own work. Agents will be paid through a percentage so, the more they get for you, the more they can earn.
