input voltage of most power adaptors are rated 100 - 250 volts ac
> hence i would'nt bother with input side
adaptor output goes to notebook / notebook batteries
a short circuit in notebook would be evident by it's behaviour & since u've not mentioned anything strange there ....
leaves out batteries & the adaptor unit itself
but u mention running on batteries ... mean batteries too i guess r ok
tho i'm not pretty good at long distance diagnostics, i smell the adaptor unit failing !
______
to make sure, switch on the adaptor with it unplugged from laptop & check if it gets hot again., if after awhile, it start getting unduly hot ... time for a new adaptor

This can happen if you keep it plugged in all the time, eventually the battery stops recharging, and the power supply is getting hot because there is too much draw on it, replace it as soon as possible or eventually you'll be sending too much power to the laptop because the battery isn't taking up any of the charge and the hard drive or processor will fail. If it runs on battery for more than a half hour then only plug it in when the battery is too low to run the laptop, but don't run it while its charging....just wait for the battery to be fully charged then unplug it again, this will not only prolong the life of the battery but also the power source and the laptop.

You need to purchase a new power cord.. Is your laptop old? If it is a newer model.. I would contact the manufacturer. There might be a recall.. Sony had on a few months ago. The batteries were catching on fire.. What ever you do.. Be careful..

Check all connections from the wall to your laptop. Check to see if anything else plugged into the same spot in the wall does the same thing. Check for anything magnetic near the heat source. Check for nicks and cuts in the cord. If all else fails, let it cool and try again.

It happens when the electricity from the outlet is higher than usual. Try to use an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) to prevent electricity surges and keep your laptop safe.
If not, change your cord... might be busted.
