uncle albert or buster merryfield died 23rd june 1999 from a brain tumor, and grandad or lennard pearce died 15 december 1984 from a heart attack

and following on from the answer above, they both died before the funerals for the show were written so rather than planning for them to leave the show the producers had no choice. Albert entered the show once Gradad died to adopt the same grandad type of role. Albert's first appearance was in series 3 at Grandad's funeral.
