My husband picked Nathaniel as his first choice for a boy name.
: ) I like it a lot too, but I am not completely settled on it. It would get shortened to Nathan or Nate. Nathaniel means 'Given by God.' Nathan means 'Giver.'

Alexander means 'Defending/Helping Men.' I prefer Nathaniel over Alexander.

Yes, I like the name Nathaniel. I like the name Alexander as well, but Alexander is a little to popular for my tastes. However, like almost everyone has stated you could use Alexander as a middle name for Nathaniel. I wouldn't recommend using Alexander as a middle name though, if you have a long last name.

From Parenting.com
NATHANIEL. Nathaniel has a slight edge on big brother Nathan in terms of style, though its popularity is rising so rapidly that, much as we essentially like the name, it would not be a great choice for parents in search of a name that will stand apart. In the New Testament, Nathaniel was the apostle who was also called Bartholomew. And no matter what its fashion standing, Nathaniel does have some worthy namesakes: writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, slave rebel NAT Turner, and singer Nat "King" Cole. Another singer, Barbara Mandrell, chose it for her son.

ALEXANDER, ALEXIS, ALEX, ALEC. The whole constellation of Alexi-related names has become tremendously popular for both boys and girls in the past few years, to the point where Alexander has just entered the Top 25 list of boys' names. (It's currently number three in England.) As opposed to many here-today, gone-tomorrow trendy names, however, Alexander has a solid historical base dating back to Alexander the Great, and has been borne by such legendary figures as the liberal Russian Tsar Alexander II, Alexander Hamilton, and Alexander Graham Bell, who laid the first foundations for the information superhighway. Alexis was a strong, Russian male alternative until the influence of the unscrupulous Alexis Carrington on Dynasty established it as an almost exclusively female name. Alec (thanks to the eldest Baldwin brother) has recently come to be seen as a sexier short form in this group than Alex, the image of which was colored by the violent hero of A Clockwork Orange, the reliable Alex Rieger on Taxi, and the buttoned-up Michael J. Fox character on Family Ties. Some possible foreign variants: ALESSANDRO (Italian), ALEJANDRO (Spanish), ALEXEI and Sasha/Sacha (Russian).

They are both very nice names and you can use them both if you wanted to make one the first name and the other as the middle name. I like Nathaniel Alexander.

I like Nathaniel over Alexander. For some reason, I like Nathaniel or Nate, but not Nathan. Just my opinion. Say it aloud with the last name, try it out, and go with what you like.
