It will be to do with the shape of the molecules and how they connect together, i guess they will always form the same shape no matter what the size

The lowest energy arrangement of Sodium and Chloride ions in the structure of common salt is Cubic Close Packing. That gives the cube shape.

salt is sodium chloride(NaCl) which is an ionic bond between sodium and chlorine. Ionics structures are always giant crystal lattices thus salt gets its cubed shape! these structures are highly stable and thus have a high melting point!
