I would. Only because that's what I did. It seems as though you would miss out on quite a bit. For instance, there is one character that you will enjoy reading about, but in book 5 (which is actually The Lost Colony. Opal is book 4), he isn't there. You'll need to read them in order.

I would definitely suggest going in order. You may ruin a plot line in 2 but reading 3 first (what if there was the chance that someone was going to die or something, but you already knew they did or didn't because you read the next book!)

They can be read individually, of course, but I have to say that the character development (especially in Artemis himself) is much more potent and shocking when you get to read about him over several incidents. Really interesting books - I suggest anything else by Eoin Colfer as well!

while each story is independent, they do refer to things that happen in the others. So it is not absolutley necessary to read all the stories in order. Although you might feel you missed something, even though they briefly explain what they are referring to. All the books in the series so far have been good...so don't hesitate on getting the others

Yes, it is vital to read them in order, as the plot changes dramatically.

i might want to definately examine the first one first. the first contained in the series provides you with an understanding of the secret fairy underground and different information which will go away you puzzled in case you do not examine the first one first.
