If the washing machine caused the fire, and the machine was owned by the flat's owner, then I suspect they are liable. However, you may have to go to court to get anything. Check in your lease to see if your belongings and living expenses are covered in any way. Most apartment complexes here in the US will provide another apartment in the event that a tenant's unit catches fire (presuming that he did not CAUSE the fire, of course), or make arrangements for the tenant to be housed elsewhere.

even if the landlord did own the washing machine, if it stated in the lease not to run the machine unattended, and you were not home..........Im not so sure they would be held responsible. As a landlord we tell everyone to have renters insurance to pay for your things lost in a fire out insurance only covers our property. I would guess that your land lord would have to foot that bill/or put you up in another apartment, but I guess it depends on who is at fault.

Read your lease. Did you have Renters Insurance- you might prevail if you sue, but it will take a long time , for a Court process to work. If there is no clause for protection in the Lease, you will probably pay.

Who owns the washing machine? If it belongs to the landlord, then he/she should compensate you. If it's yours then you're out of luck.
