Space Needle Corporation looms large over Seattle. The company owns the Emerald City's Space Needle, the 605-foot historical landmark that is recognized as the symbol of the city. Built in 1962 as part of the Seattle World's Fair, the Space Needle features an observation deck, the SkyCity revolving restaurant, meeting and banquet facilities, and the SpaceBase retail shop. More than 1 million people a year visit the Space Needle, which underwent a $20 refurbishing in 1999-2001. Needle architect John Graham, Bagley Wright, Howard Wright, Ned Skinner, and Norton Clapp formed the Pentagram Corporation to build the needle. They all eventually sold their shares to Howard Wright whose still family owns it.

I lived in Seattle for 20 years and I know the Space Needle is PRIVATELY OWNED; the city of Seattle does NOT own it. However, I don't know which family or organization owns it.

I suspect the city itself does. It was built for the World Fair in 1962, along with the rest of Seattle Center. The page below is a City of Seattle site, so that at least lends a bit more credence to my theory - very cool photos, by the way - enjoy!

I would say that it was built for the people, but it probably belongs to the board on commerce, and the bond holders.
