Certainly you can have a 2 person band. It might add some extra challenges to you, but there are ways to fill out your sound if you want a low end.
Something you can consider getting so that you can play Guitar and a "bass like" sound (or any other sound), would be either a Taurus Pedal (They were old analog pedals, used by bands like Rush when the bass player needed to have his hands on the keys and could carry a simple bass tone with the foot pedals). Or you can go after the modern version of it called a KATAR MP-113. It's a MIDI pedal controller that allows you to hook it up to a MIDI sound bank (or brain as they are sometimes called) and you can pick any sound you want, like low end strings (Cello or Double bass) or you can select a variation of pre programmed bass sounds. I believe you can set the controller to hit the notes at a tempo, so you just hold the pedal down and it will thump out the notes at whatever preset tempo you set it at. Certainly isn't going to give you a fantastic counter melody, but it will round out your band with a full sound.
I intend to get the MP-113 (I've seen them listed new for $320). And I have a Roland Midi brain already, so that way while I'm playing bass in the high frets, I can supplement the low end with an orchestral accompaniment.
One good thing about a preset tempo is that it will make you and your drummer play more "tight". Computers don't slow down or speed up, so it acts like a metronome and will really help your playing.
Feel free to write me via my profile if you'd like more advice. Good luck and hope to hear you sometime!

Can you think of ny bands without a bass player? Not really. It kinda points out that this is a needed part of the band. However, there are ways around it. If you are a talented guitarist, you can tune your bottom e string down an octave, and play the bass part along with the lead. But without a bass player, the sound doesnt have alot of depth in it. Look at the RHCP for bass inspiration, Flea is one of the worlds best bassists, and JF and Flea create this awesome sound by playing two different riffs which make the song!

Depends on the type of sound that you are after. If you are looking for the typical dime a dozen sound then yes, you need at least 1 more member for the band to play bass.
