You won't get any help from your council. You could get a loan but it means starting out in debt and I would not recommend that. I would advise good old fashioned saving. That's what me and my husband did 8 years ago. It is difficult to get that deposit, but if want to move out so bad, then you can do it.

One thing you must try right away is to search the web looking at properties across the UK. On Friday, buy a copy of the Times. It comes with a pull out mag called Bricks and Mortar - it will explain a lot about what's happening in the property market today. It may also have some advice on getting on the property ladder.

Please do not delay and do not ever give up searching for a suitable property. Even if it means uprooting yourselves and your family and moving off to a new area maybe hundreds of miles away from home, give it serious consideration.

If either you or your partner are in 'trade' - got a City and Guilds qualification etc., then you are sitting pretty, because trade can go anywhere and get work; plumbers, electricians etc. Even the influx recently of Polish trade will not stop you finding work - they're mostly concentrated in the big cities and conurbations.

Start searching the UK web right now for property. There are hundreds of thousands of properties for sale. Search also for mortgage lenders. You will eventually find what you're looking for.

Good luck.

You cant get any money for a deposit from the Council/Government, but if you work (which you would need to to get a private flat) then you should just take a loan for the deposit. You should get it back at the end of the tenancy anyway.
Otherwise get your name down on the list for a Council house - you will have to wait a long time though!!

some parts have community charities or church homes that help on a one time foundation. right here we've the community action community. basically ask round. EDIT: even as I apreciate bpl's answer the reality is that maximum landlords received't artwork with you. in case you do not have finished deposit at flow in then you definitely do not flow in.

the best you can hope for is your local housing authority to rent you one of their properties depending on how many points you accumulate. me and my missus got zero points as we both work and have no kids, so we rent private. at worst you may have to go into a hostel to get points before getting a council house or flat. its a screwed up world where the housing authorties dont help those who need it most, while this happens the banks are circling looking for the kill.

Another option is to look into shared ownership schemes. Try typing shared ownership and your town name into a search engine and it should bring something up to help you.

By "partner," do you mean gay lover? There's a thing called pooling your income.
