Good question...but is the root word of revolution (revolve) or is it (revolt). Using revolve you could say that there is one revolution of the second hand on a clock per minute. That means it went 360 degrees around. Using revolt which could be a sudden or complete change in a situation you would not say it was a 360 degree change because that would take you back around to where it started in the first place. A revolution in that sense would be a 180 degree change.
So what makes a revolution a revolution depends on the context of what you mean by revolution. If you are just looking for different definitions then:
Orbital motion about a point, especially as distinguished from axial rotation: the planetary revolution about the sun.
revolution (n.) The overthrow of one government and its replacement with another.
revolution (n.) A sudden or momentous change in a situation: the revolution in computer technology.
or
a : a sudden, radical, or complete change b : a fundamental change in political organization; especially : the overthrow or renunciation of one government or ruler and the substitution of another by the governed c : activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation d : a fundamental change in the way of thinking about or visualizing something : a change of paradigm
