First I will go out on a limb and say categorically, it was not Adam nor was it Santa Claus. There never was a first man on earth. Our ancestors 5 million years ago were bipedal creatures with a chimp sized brain. 2 million years ago they began to develop much larger brains. The first "modern" humans were about 200,000 years ago. During all this time, there were always a large viable population of humans so there was never a first man. I suppose that there has to a be point, arbitrary though it may be, where it finally became a man, but what you must understand is that this "man" differed minisculely from its parents that were presumably apes or at least not men.

The first man on earth was a woman - Lucy! At least that's the oldest remains to have been unearthed so far. She's about 40,000 years old. This crap about Adam being created 6000 years ago... absolutely no evidence for it whatsoever, and the evidence that does exist is against it! He who has all the fossils, wins! (bumper sticker - I thought it was great!)

I guess to answer the question properly we need to examine what do you mean by "who". In everyday life when we ask a question, like "who is the world's richest man?" - we would expect an answer with a name. Obviously the first man did not have a written or oral language at the time that was passed down to us. Secondly we need to define what is mean by first man. If science's slow, gradual evolution i sassumed then there is probably not a sharp boundary between the ape and man. So all we can say about this first man is roughly when he came about by examining fossils or by looking at differences in number of mutated genetic markers between between man and apes to determine roughly when the division between the species occured.
Scientist descibe the genus "homo" as being distinct from their ape cousins. The oldest species of homo known is homo habilis which is believed to have lived 2.4 to 1.5 million years ago - one of these first hominids was nicknamed "handy man" by the anthropologist Louis Leaky as he was clearly a tool maker.
Homo sapiens, our species, on the other hand, has lived from 200,000 years ago until the present.
As your answer is posted in the anthropology rather than the religion section, I will avoid naming all the first men from all the different religious and mythological traditions around the world. Here is a sampling: Adam for Islam-Judaeo-Christianity, Wurugag - in Australian Aboriginal myth, Ask in Norse mythology, Deucalion in Greek, Manu in Hindusim and so on.

The liberals don't think there was a first man; only slime that evolved into mulitple monkeys. At least I guess that's what they think.
