You should be able to find a 512Mb for 39.99 and a 1Gb for 49.99, for the no brand name kinds (which work great). I got one of those and it seems to have all the bells and whistles as others. Most will have FM radio, play/record voice recordings and of course play mp3/wma files.
To make the mp3 player totally worthwhile, for 25 bucks at Walmart: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4694330 , you can get a FM transmitter that will plug into your car cigarette lighter and broadcast the MP3 player songs onto a regular FM radio station in the car (much better than those CD to cassette adapters you may have heard of)
Another great thing to do with the mp3 player is to goto someplace like Radio Shack and buy a cord (about $3-4) that has the male headphone jack on one end and two RCA jacks on the other. Then plug it into the input jack of your house stereo.
So now you can have a portable mp3 player, a house stereo mp3 player and a car stereo mp3 player for about 30.00 extra...

the prices are coming down. wait buddy...!
but you never get one. you know why? because when it reaches the lowest price, suddenly the technology introduces the next generation of music players much better than Mp3 players. then you should wait again for prices to decrease.

Yes, and you really have to shop around and look @ ads... The off brands (non Ipods) have come down considerably... You can get a 1 Gig for under $100

MP3 players are quite cheap nowadays. you can get a 1 GB MP3 player for £23.97.
