Write the temperature difference between five pair of places:
-22 C and -15
19 C and -15C
-15C and -6 etc.
is it 7 C in the first instance ignoring the minus degrees and 4 degrees in the second instance and last 9 in the last or is the first one as follows
-22 - (-15)=-37 which is in my view incorrect.
Please help!!

temperature difference is larger temperature minium smaller temperature

For -22C and -15C
temperature difference = -15C - (-22C) = -15C +22C = 7C

For 19C and -15C
temperature difference = 19C - (-15C) = 19C + 15C = 34C

For -15C and -6C,
temperature difference = -6C - (-15C) = -6C +15C = 9C

There is an increase in temperature from -22 to
-15. To obtain increase subtract 1st number from second number as follows:-

-!5 - (-22) = -15 + 22 = 7. Increase of 7°C
Can think of number line and ask how to get from - 22 to -15. The answer is 7 steps to the right , hence answer of 7

Similarly,drop between 19 and -15 calculated by:-
-15 - 19 = -34. Decrease of 34°C.
Again, using the number line, there are 19 steps
left to zero and then another 15 steps left to -15°
Total is 34 left, giving -34

Similarly, increase between -15 and -6 calculated by:-
-6 - (-15) = -6 +15 = 9.

Can think of the number line and ask how many steps from -15 to -6?
Answer is 9 steps to the right, giving an answer of 9.

1) The diff between -15 deg (the higher temp) and -22 deg (the lower temp) is: -15 - (-22) = -15 + 22 = +7deg
2) 19 - (-15) = 19 + 15 = +34 deg
3) -6 - (-15) = -6 + 15 = +9 deg

Note: Always subtract the lower temp from the higher temp, taking signs into consideration. For example, -50 deg is lower than -1 deg,; therefore temp diff = -1 - (-50) = -1 + 50 = +49

-22 - (-15)=-37

Two minius make a postive so it is -22 + 15 = -7

The difference in the tempeture is 7 degrees as you said.

In the second case brake it into two different part if it helps

you have 19 degree before you hit zero, and another 15 degrees to go after that. So the difference is 19 +15 = 34

Or you can take the sum as a whole therfore 19 - (-15) = 34
(remember two minus make a +)
and your answer for the last one is spot on!

7 34 9

2007-01-08 22:38:55 · answer #5 · answered by Snot Me 6 · 0 1

-15 - (-22) = -15 + 22 = 7
19 - (-15) = 19 + 15 = 34
-6 - (-15) = -6 + 15 = 9

Always remember that:

subtracting a negative is the same as adding

you should subtract the smaller from the larger (Note that -15 is larger than -22 and -6 is larger than -15)

If so, you'll always get it right.

-22 and -15 = 7 (yes there is 7degrees difference between them.you ignore the minus' because they both are)

19 and -15 = 34 (you add them together because basically because the first is a plus, you take off 19, to get to 0, then take the 15 to get the -15 and add those to make 34 so thats the difference.

-15 and -6 = 9

An easy way to do this is write out a list from say +20 degrees down the 0degrees and then down to -25degrees like this:
2
1
0
-1
-2
etc. then find the two values on the list and then add the ammount of values between them.

7C is correct for the first one.
-22 - (-15)=
-22 + 15 =
15 - 22 =
-7C

For the second question the relevent sum is:
19-(-15) = 19+15 = 34C
If you think about it, you need to move 15C to get up from -15 to zero, and then a further 19C to move from zero up to 19C, or 34C in total.

The final answer is 9C - you need to move 9 degrees down from -6 to get to -15

Remember - when you subtract a negative number, this is the same as adding a positive number - the two minus signs 'cancel out.'

7 in the first, 34 in the second and 9 in the third. try -22 +(-15)=9

-22 - (-15) = -22 + 15 = -9
- 15 - - 22 = -15 + 22 = 9
|-9| = 9

19 - -15 = 19 + 15 = 34

-6 --15 = -6 + 15 = 9

difference = large number-small number
in the first pair -15>-22 (as 22>15)

therefore -15-(-22)=7
similarly19-(-15)= 34
-6-(-15)= 9
