In my Flat (that I rent out) water from the shower cant escape and runs down the walls and in turn becomes mould. I have a really powerful shower and this only exasperates the problem

My tenant is not using the de humidifier that I gave her and does not put the heating on in the day to save electricity.

Does anyone know how I can stop this water from staying in the flat and causing mould?

I don’t want to lose the tenant as otherwise she keeps the place really tidy and clean

First you must put in an extractor fan. This should be a must for all showers. It can go through a wall or have a window adapted for one. It will come on when shower is in use and after use the fan can be set to run for a further 5 to 25 minutes. This will help but will not stop the residual water from causing the mould. She should use a device like a windscreen wiper to take the water off the wall and then use a special shower spray. Tell her that this is important and the cost is minimal. Also tell her that the mould can cause chest infections and asthma time problems. This might move her into action.

Yes, it's cool... I love to watch running water, be it off my body in the shower, or off of the rocks in a stream, or down the window when it's raining. Ever sit in a dark car at night when it is raining under a street light? The coolest shadows ever.

Ask her to wipe the wall down after use/ open the bathroom window after use.
Tell her that any clean up of mould will be taken off her deposit

Go into the flat and give the shower area a good scrub down with bleach.

If there is insufficient heating, and a shortage of ventilation, then this is going to cause problems throughout the flat. Absorbent materials will collect moisture. You should install an extractor in the shower area, and persuade your tenant that she must at least use the dehumidifier. Dampness/mould growth can cause health problems, as well as deterioration in the walls' condition.

Fit an extractor fan, either switched on by the shower heater itself or a "humidistat" - a humidity-controlled switch, like a thermostat is for temperature.
