If you for example make a picture in Photoshop and saves it on the hard drive, and then close Photoshop and write a word document and saves this at the space after the image will be occupied. So if you edit your picture again and saves it, the continuation of the picture will be placed after the word document. This is supposed to slow down the reading speed, so defragmenting it means that you put the picture together as 1 block of data rather than 2 or more...

As a computer writes data to your hard drive, it will try to find a contiguous block of space to write the entire file ( or data ). However, on the hard drive, contiguous block of spaces may not be available to be written. As such, the computer has a algorithm which is able to to break up the file into parts and write each part into the next available blocks of space on the hard drive. As files are deleted, independent fragments / blocks of space are released. With constant writing and deleting of files, more and more of such fragments of space & written data accumulate. Ultimately, it would take a longer time for the computer to retrieve a complete file as it would have to search for all the necessary data fragments to compose the entire file for display or use.

To address this problem, the concept of deframentation is born. Defragmentation of the hard drive involves a software algorithm which would do a major re-organization of all the files on the hard drive. It does this by consolidating all the free spaces, consolidating all the fragmented data into a complete file to be stored as a contiguous block of space (defragment), and reorganise all the defragmented files into a more efficient manner for retrieval according to the preference settings set by the computer user. In this manner, it would improve considerably the time taken to search for and retrieve a file for display or for processing.

Think of your computer as an office, with lots of files and filing cabinets.

Normally, new files are put in the cabinet closest to the door by the mail room.

Defragmenting puts all the files that are related to each other closer to each other, and moves everything to where it's closer to your desk.

This makes it easier to work quickly, because everything is closer together.

Defragmenting takes related files on your hard drive and puts them next to each other, so your hard drive can find them quicker.

Using your computer all the time the files aren't always put away to the right space on your hard drive, defragment takes all the filse and puts them back on the hard drive right and the hard drive then is more organized. Which should give you more speed and better preformance. Looking for files they should be found faster.

Defragmentation is the process of locating the noncontiguous fragments of data into which a computer file may be divided as it is stored on a hard disk, and rearranging the fragments and restoring them into fewer fragments or into the whole file. Defragmentation reduces data access time and allows storage to be used more efficiently.

when you use your computer, the files on your hard disk are fragmented. so you may find a file fragmented in two or three pieces located in different places on your hard drive. This will make your computer slower. Defragmentation regroups these fragments and make the file one part again and so your computer will respond faster.

As you create and delete files on harddrive data chunks get spread out in your harddrive making it harder to read data. Defragmenting hard drive organizes data chunks so they're (each files) easier/quicker to read.

It's like taking pile of books in your garage and alphabetizing them so you can find books quicker.

Files when created are stored in hard disk in space as and where available. During defragmetation all the related files are put together and thus storage space is increased and acess speed is increased.

Uhm, it increases your computer's speed when it is in your use for a long time. It is part of your computer maintenance so continue doing it. I don't know what's the process of defragmentation.
