I don't think you'll find many, not because i wish the failure on you but because it's not really a clever thing to do.

You can't retain or grow a fan base effectively if you appeal to a different taste in music especially on the second album.

Having said all that, I think there might be a few bands who had an album out before their first Official /worldwide release which might have sounded very different if only due to changes in equipment and/or band members.

I think you'd find more third albums that are completely different from the first than what you're looking for...

Evanescence

Although Fallen wasn't they're first album it was all metal meets soft melodies. The Open Door, the second major release, is a lot softer and more personal than the Fallen, but a key member did leave so that accounts for most of the change.

I heard that Avril Lavigne used to be a country and western singer!!!
Hard to imagine.
And also what's with Christina Aguilera? She used to be all trampy, and now she's gone for that classic 50s style. But that's just her image.
Also Jewel changed pretty dramatically.

Exile. Had a pop/rock hit with "Kiss You All Over" in the 1970's, then went country/western after that.

Depeche Mode....first album was very techno pop (alternative) and second album was more laid back. Seems they tend to re-invent themselves with each album.
