in the day time air is very hot , light and molecules are more energetic. So the sound of the plane is heared even if it is far away. The sound vibrate the sound molecules. Then the tranfer of the sound is very easy. But in the night the atmosphere is cold . Then the air is more denser than the air in the day time. So the sound of the plane is not powerful to vibrate the clod lazy air molecules. So we hear a reduced sound in the night.

You can only really hear planes when they take off or come into land. In flight they are 5 or 6 miles up in the air - too far away to hear (can you hear the trucks in a city 6 miles away - thought not).

At night there are restrictions on take off and landing to keep areas around airports quiet. Longhaul flights may still be overhead, but they are at cruising altitude.

Hey don't think that at day they are far. During night,it's dark that's why they fly efficiently high in order to avoid craches due to any high hieght obstacle. So, we hear it's sound low.
