When Iraq was invaded, the lack of security and infrastructure (Because of no post-invasion plan by the US) caused many to revert to the old tribal allegiances and their militias for safety. The tribal leaders are thugs who are only in it for themselves and whatever little power base they can carve out - they have no loyalty to the country as a whole. This is the cause of the factional fighting you hear about. Also the Sunni/Shia rift is exarcerbated by aimless gangs of young men who have no jobs or hope for the future other than fighting. All of this could have been prevented if the Bush admin had any real understanding of the culture and history of the country they were invading, but they didn't care, it was all about the oil and removing Iraq as a threat to Israel (Not the US).

To us outsiders, they are all Iraqis. But to the people living there, they are all of different tribes, or ethnic differences, as well as politically different. So, to them, they are not seeing each other as Iraqis. They see each others as "enemies" or "traitors" or as "undesirables"

(Pretty much like a lot of countries in the world really, but because we are not bombing each other, we deny it)
